Jennifer Hudson Performs in Gown Inspired by Whitney Houston’s 1994 AMAs Look

Jennifer Hudson will always remember Whitney Houston.

On Oct. 6, the Dreamgirls star, 43, took the stage to perform a powerful medley, including “I WIll Always Love You,” at the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special in L.A. on Oct. 6.

While the rendition was nothing short of breathtaking, Hudson’s look was just as special, as it paid homage to an ensemble Houston wore onstage during the 1994 AMAs. The late icon won 22 American Music Awards, including the Award of Merit in 1994, over the course of her career.

Styled by Maeve Reilly, Hudson wore a black La Roxx gown complete with sheer detailing and a crystal-embellished neckline and sleeves. She accessorized with dangling drop earrings.

Houston’s look from 30 years ago had a similar silhouette and featured a sweeping cape and turtleneck.

Hudson’s hair was styled in a sleek high ponytail by Albert Morrison while her makeup, done by Adam Burrell, consisted of a smokey eye, bold lashes and a nude lip.

In a video shared to the AMAs Instagram account, Hudson recalled her earliest memories of Houston, sharing that, at 7 years old, she was “captivated by this goddess” whose voice sounded like it was from “heaven.”

On her connection to The Bodyguard star, the American Idol alum said that she always resonated with Houston’s “gospel.”

“I don’t think I can recall a time [when] I didn’t know of Whitney,” she added.

Houston died in 2012 at the age of 48. Her death was caused by an accidental drowning with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. Her life was recently the center of the 2022 biopic, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, starring Naomi Ackie.
