Katie Holmes Wore a Striped Sweater with Mary Jane Shoes, Get the Look

Katie Holmes has earned her fashion stripes — at least, according to me, she has. 

I didn’t think it was possible to pack so many celebrity-coded elements into a single outfit, but then The Dawson’s Creek actress, 45, did it with ease. At the end of September, the star was photographed in a buttery striped sweater, which was similar to one Gwyneth Paltrow put on display earlier in the month. Keeping with the cozy theme, she bundled up in the seasonal style Jennifer Hudson just wore: sweater pants.  

She also carried a tall tote bag (no surprise there!) and accessorized with blue Mary Janes, the shoes that I’ve happily replaced my sneakers with. I’ve honestly started to wonder, is she aiming to set a new Mary Jane-wearing record? Because I’ve lost count of all the times she’s been seen in the comfy shoes.

Zesica Oversized Striped Pullover Sweater, $26 with coupon and Prime

This pullover sweater is the closest match I found. Like hers, the cuffs are ribbed, the neckline is slightly scooped, and navy is the overwhelming color. The hem at the bottom is much thicker than Holmes’ though, which I actually think would sit nicer and not fold or tuck over in awkward ways.

Rather than assembling a makeshift monochrome outfit, just buy this two-piece set that will ensure the top and bottoms are a true match. 

Rekayla Mary Jane Flats, $25 with Prime

Since acquiring a few pairs of flats, I’ve noticed that pointed-toe pairs feel too professional for my liking. I wear rounded-toe styles the majority of the time, and I’m constantly looking for more like these.  

BCBG Structured Tote Bag

When a tote is too big, the contents can pile up quickly. To keep things to more of a minimum, a medium-sized bag like this one from BCBG will keep things in check. It also has a unique curved shape that instantly had me drawing comparisons to ones from more expensive brands. 

Kirundo Striped Turtleneck Sweater, $23 with Prime 

If a pair of nautical sailor shorts and a striped sweater were made into one, this would be the end result thanks to its timeless pattern and shiny buttons. Also, a sweater can’t really get much warmer than a turtleneck, so this is one to break out during those single-digit temperatures. 

Gap CashSoft Shaker-Stitch Sweater Pants

With an elastic waistband, a non-confining silhouette, and a “supersoft cotton-blend” fabric, per the brand, I’m not sure these could possibly be more comfortable. They’re available in five colors and sizes up to XXL, plus regular, tall, and petite inseams. 

Franco Sarto Tinsley Mary Jane Flat, $59 with Prime

Aside from blue, Holmes has also gone for silver accessories. In fact, she wore these exact Franco Sarto shoes last month. And bonus points: One shopper described them as their “most comfortable non-athletic shoe for walking.”

Instead of dealing with low-quality zippers that get stuck on its tracks and cheapen the bag’s look, I’m prioritizing picks like this one with magnetic snaps.

Gap CashSoft Crewneck Sweater

“Cashmere soft but not a cashmere price” is how one shopper described this striped crewneck that’s on sale.

Grapent Wide-Leg Knit Pants, $23 with Prime

Even full-priced, these wide-leg pants are one of the most budget-friendly routes available. But just know, the brand recommends they be washed by hand. 

Zesica Oversized V-Neck Striped Sweater, $29 with coupon and Prime

This V-neck sweater comes with a preppy polo-like collar — something we’ve seen on Julia Roberts, Joanna Gaines, and Jennifer Garner.  

Vibi Venezia Mary Jane Flats

If light blue calls to you, Anthropologie has this two-tone pair that’s an impressive $275 less than the $430 Mary Janes Holmes was seen in back in the spring. Unlike the others, these flats are totally flat with no heel whatsoever — so they may be a blessing for those who regularly deal with heel pain.

Colorful shoes are just a little too far out of my wardrobe wheelhouse. But black? They’re a never-failing neutral that, in my opinion, will never not be “in.”
